Frequently asked questions
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
The overall band is the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands. If the average ends in .25 it is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75 it is rounded up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in IELTS Listening?
You usually need around 30 – 31 correct answers out of 40 for band 7 in Listening.
Is the Reading score different for Academic and General Training?
Yes. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band – for example about 34 – 35 correct for band 7, compared with 30 – 32 in Academic Reading.
What IELTS score do I need to study abroad?
Most universities ask for 6.0 – 6.5 overall for bachelor’s and 6.5 overall (with no band below 6.0) for master’s. Top universities may ask for 7.0 or higher.
